Recent\u00a0Weird Weather in the UK:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

March\u00a02012\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0third\u00a0warmest\u00a0on\u00a0record.\u00a0<\/span>Summer\u00a02012\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0second \u00a0wettest\u00a0on\u00a0record.\u00a0<\/span>Spring\u00a02013\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0coldest\u00a0in\u00a050\u00a0years.\u00a0May\u00a0& June 2013\u00a0the\u00a0wettest\u00a0on\u00a0record.<\/span>July 2013 the hottest this\u00a0century.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nEd is a member of the Earth System Science group at Exeter University. \u00a0He will report on current scientific understanding of what is influencing our weather and how it connects to climate change.
\nDave<\/b> <\/b>Green (Fire Brigades Union)<\/b>
\nDave is a fireman and is the National Officer for Floods for the Fire Brigades Union. \u00a0He will talk about fighting floods, the potential dangers, and the proposed cut-backs to the Fire Service.
\nChris<\/b> <\/b>Williamson (Derby North MP)<\/b>
\nChris Williamson is the Shadow Fire Minister. He will talk about the need for Government to tackle Climate Change, and how to respond to impact of erratic weather.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re used to unpredictable weather and all sorts of daily variations \u2013 that\u2019s why we talk so much about the weather in Britain!\u00a0 \u00a0But the extreme weather of recent years is new.<\/p>\n

We in Derby, cocooned by our central heating and air conditioning, may find it difficult to attribute the exceptional and unpredictable weather changes to climate change. We soon forget the freezing weather we had this spring, or the rather warm autumn two years ago, and the floods.<\/p>\n

However recent years have seen the deadliest ever tornados in the \u00a0tornado belt in the USA, unprecedented flooding in Australia and Pakistan, heat waves and fires in Australia and other parts of the world. And the list goes on.<\/p>\n

We brush off the fact that scientists have warned for a long time that global warming would be accompanied by a break down of normal weather and we would see more extreme fluctuations and unpredictability. The Met Office held a meeting of experts in June to find out what the reasons are for this new feature. \u00a0Everyone agreed that the movements of the \u2018jet stream\u2019 have changed but what is their cause?<\/p>\n
