{"id":652,"date":"2016-03-21T12:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-21T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/?p=652"},"modified":"2021-01-21T15:49:57","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T15:49:57","slug":"osborne-delivers-climate-wrecking-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/?p=652","title":{"rendered":"Osborne delivers climate-wrecking budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/George-Osborne-Budget.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-653\" src=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/George-Osborne-Budget.jpg\" alt=\"George Osborne Budget\" width=\"630\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/George-Osborne-Budget.jpg 630w, http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/George-Osborne-Budget-300x213.jpg 300w, http:\/\/derbyclimate.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/George-Osborne-Budget-624x443.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=73ace8236259de3e09600c686&amp;id=212b90f5c4&amp;e=d9440d2bf7\">Chancellor<\/a>\u00a0said \u00a0he would \u201cput the next generation first\u201d in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.us5.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=73ace8236259de3e09600c686&amp;id=9007e8bb88&amp;e=d9440d2bf7\">Budget<\/a>\u00a02016, yet failed to mention climate change or the Paris Agreement to tackle global warming. \u00a0In effect it was \u00a0a Climate-wrecking\u2019 Budget after \u00a31bn tax breaks for oil and gas industry.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Osborne <strong>promised <\/strong>yet more support for fossil fuels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A further tax cut for the oil and gas industry.<\/li>\n<li>Extending the fuel duty freeze even as fuel prices have fallen further.<\/li>\n<li>Promising a \u00a31 billion &#8220;Shale Wealth Fund&#8221; to be &#8220;deployed in local communities and the North as a whole.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Yet more investment in road-building as rural bus services face Beeching-style funding cuts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=73ace8236259de3e09600c686&amp;id=0f78963072&amp;e=d9440d2bf7\">the Guardian<\/a>: &#8220;<em>Energy efficiency programmes, which should always be the first choice in tackling energy and climate problems, are being cut 80% by Osborne.<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0and \u00a0<em>There was nothing to reboot investment in community-based renewable energy projects, badly hit by his own Treasury-led cuts to feed-in tariffs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/derbyclimate.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=73ace8236259de3e09600c686&amp;id=38f9baffd8&amp;e=d9440d2bf7\">Caroline Lucas<\/a>\u00a0MP commented: \u201c<em>This Budget locks us into fossil fuel dependency and completely contradicts the Prime Minister\u2019s call to action at the Paris climate talks.
